What is Enlightenment?


Today’s topic is enlightenment.  A question that often comes up is “how do I become enlightened?”  People will often refer to this as something that happens to a person spontaneously–as if by magic. It certainly can be true that a major life event, such as the loss of a loved one or an illness, can propel you forward into a new way of thinking. For me, enlightenment is something that has happened more slowly, over time.  The more I am aware of my existence and that there is something beyond this world, the better I understand what enlightenment is. So, what does it mean to be enlightened?  What is the difference between enlightenment and awareness?  Here is the explanation from the spirit world…

Awareness comes from the thoughts of what is currently happening in your life.  You are aware that you exist, that you are a thinking being, and that in your life you have choices.  Enlightenment is when you understand that there is more than just this life.  You believe that you are divinely guided and that you already have everything you need to have a peaceful life. 

You cannot have enlightenment without first having an awareness.  You must have the awareness that there is a self, there is a physical body, and that you have thoughts.  You understand how those thoughts affect your life.  Once awareness has been brought forward, you can then begin the process of enlightenment.  It is learning about yourself and what you want for this life.  It is to trust that you are heading in the right direction.  It is to see that there is a connection in all things.  It is a deeper knowing of all that exists—seen and unseen.  It is the letting go of an expectation.  It is the bringing in of faith in all that is.  It is to move through the world with the ultimate goal of contributing in a positive way.  It is to listen to your inner voice, your soul, and the energy within to see what it wants and why you are here.  

Enlightenment can only come from letting go of your thinking and trusting that your soul already knows where you are going.  It is to trust that there is something more than your present state of awareness.  Enlightenment is truly made up of joy, acceptance, and a willingness to move in any direction, knowing that you will have a positive impact on the energy of the universe as a whole.  

Start with an awareness.  Expand to a knowing.  Let your life be all it was meant to be with the faith that you are loved and guided throughout. 

The picture I choose was taken on a lovely fall hike along a river.  The sun was setting and I couldn’t help but notice that it was the perfect moment to capture what enlightenment might feel like.  Of course it is more than that, but it creates a good visual!

Can We Change Our Thoughts?

This is the last of the three part series on how your negative thoughts can bring discontent to your life, whereas positive thoughts can bring harmony. Last time we talked about how we all have a physical, mental, and spiritual side to our being.  Now let’s talk about what we can do to balance those three essential elements. How do you get unstuck from a way of thinking that is not good for your well-being? Here is what spirit has to say about bringing balance to your being by changing your thoughts…

You start with one thought at a time.  You begin the search for meaning. You look at what your thoughts are doing to help you.  The thoughts you think determine how you will respond in any given situation.  If you were to look at these thoughts as a way to change your thinking about yourself, you would use it as a way to believe in yourself.  You would change a negative thought into a positive.  You would only generate thoughts that would help you for what lies ahead.  Look ahead to how you want to live and begin to change your thinking. You would trust that what you are experiencing now, will help you in the days to come.  This belief alone leaves you with no desire to have negative thoughts. This belief alone leaves you with a sense of peace in all that is.

Sounds so easy, doesn’t it?  Of course this takes effort.  We have to be aware of these thoughts in order to change them.  Another way to look at balancing is to have the belief that all is well.  Here is what spirit has to say about the belief in our ability to heal our bodies too…

Of course positive thought is a start, but a belief that all is well is really the way to change the pattern of thought.  When you believe that you have the power within for all of life’s teachings (we call them teachings because nothing is ever negative when looked at as a way to learn), this can help your body to heal.  When discontent has arrived, begin the process of balance.  Start with one thought at a time.  Convert the negative into a positive.  Believe this can be done.  Balance the energy within by giving your body what is needs through rest, forgiveness, being in nature, or anything that brings you joy.  Make this a practice every day, even if it is only one thing.  Over time, the energy within will shift. It will calm.  It will start to bring balance to all.

Thinking of the physical, mental, and spiritual as a way to balance really is about bringing awareness to your thoughts and believing that you have the power to change the energy within.  When I get out of balance, I always begin by being kind to my body, which in turn calms my mind, which in turn helps me feel connected to the my spiritual self.  What would help you to be in balance?  Start with your thoughts and see where that takes you.

What Does it Mean to be Balanced?


Last time we talked about our thoughts and how they can bring discontent to the body. I had quite the awakening about this.  I fell and hurt my knee and immediately thought the worst.  I was in pain and very frustrated with myself. Let’s just say, I was a bit angry at the situation!  It was not until I realized that my thoughts had the power to make this experience miserable or something I could learn from. So, how do we change our negative thoughts?  How can we bring balance despite our circumstance?  Here is what spirit has to say about what balance of self means…

Bringing yourself back into balance does not have to mean a radical change.  It can mean learning to understand yourself.  It can mean learning to understand why you suffer from your thoughts.  Balance comes from taking the time to analyze, understand, and look at all aspects of your being.  It is to understand that you have all the tools you need to bring the physical body back into alignment, the mental body back into a peaceful state, and the spiritual body back into pure energy and consciousness.  If you were to look at yourself as these three essential elements—the elements that bring you to living a balanced life, you would spend time thinking about what it means for you.  To be balanced is what leads to peacefulness within self.  We all have the capacity to do this.  It is all about the attention given to self and what it means to be balanced.  Use the spiritual, physical, and mental as a way to see yourself as one being.  This will always lead you to where you need to go.  This will always be what brings you to peace.  This will always be a way to understand your true nature and the nature of others.

I love this visual:  Think of a triangle with you in the center.  “Spiritual” above your head, “Mental” on the right side of your feet, and “Physical” on the left side of your feet.  If you think about each of these aspects, you will notice that when one is out of balance, so too are the others. When I am in pain, my thoughts are of suffering.  When my thoughts are of suffering, I do not feel connected to my spiritual self.  When I am not connected to my spiritual self and think of myself as only as a physical being, I tend to hurt more. And on and on it goes.

So what specifically can we do to stop this cycle of suffering?  This will be what we will explore in my next blog.  In the meantime, I hope you will think about what these three essential elements of self mean to you.

Are We Our Thoughts?


Let’s talk about “thoughts.”  We all have them.  We all have an internal dialog going on all of the time.  We might think about how we look, how we feel, what we have to do, what others have said, and on and on.  What you probably don’t think about is how many of those thoughts are negative.  Here is what spirit has to say about our thoughts…

Your thoughts alone are what can bring you to peace or discontent.  When negative thoughts become something you always use, they can then bring themselves to the body.  The cells begin to react to the thoughts.  Your body then begins to live those thoughts.  After all, they are only responding to the directions given by your thoughts.  Negative thoughts produce energy within the body, just as positive thoughts do.  The difference is the way your cells respond.  When thoughts are positive, your cells are instructed to be in balance.  When your thoughts are negative, your cells are instructed to produce energy that turns against the body.  Over time, this is what can cause discontent in the body and the mind.

I definitely have experienced this in my own life.  It can be very difficult to see the connection between our thoughts and our physical body.  Most of the time, we are not even aware of how many of our thoughts are negative or how it is affecting our lives.  Here is another way to help you understand.

What you hold on to, whether it be a negative belief, a mistrust in yourself, or whether it is tied to a negative thought about another, can only cause discontent in the body and the mind.  Understand that this will only limit your life.  Understand that this kind of thinking can affect those around you.  What is not forgiven, stays within the physical body.  What is not released stays within the mind.  What is not let go completely, stays within the energy around you.  This can only bring suffering.  Think about this.  Understand how thoughts can drive all within self.

This sure makes me wonder about my own way of thinking. All I can do is have an awareness of those thoughts and try to replace a negative thought with a positive one. Sounds a lot easier than it is!  The question is: how do you bring your body and mind back into balance?  Spirit definitely has some things to say about that too.  This will be the topic of my next blog, so stay tuned!

Your Loved Ones Live On

As a medium, I get asked a lot of questions about the other side, but the question that I get asked the most is:  “Is my loved one ok?” I answer this with a resounding, “yes!”  It is we who are left in the physical world and have to learn to live without them.  Here is what spirit has to say about the process of letting go of our loved ones here on the physical plane: 

Understand that you’re thinking about the loss of a loved one can be seen in a different way.  You have memories of a physical past, a physical touch, and a physical presence that drives you forward.  These memories are what we cling to for reassurance of their existence in this life.

If you were to think of their existence of being in another part of the world, instead of gone forever, you would feel reassured that they are okay in this world. Transfer that thought of them being in your world, and being okay, to this world. Everything you do touches your loved one, everything you say is heard by your loved one, and everything you feel is felt by your loved one. This is how the spiritual world works. We are one with you, we want the best for you, and we believe in you.

When you live your life attached to a physical being, without the presence of this being, you are not acknowledging that what was connected all along was your souls, your energy, and your reason for being together. The energy behind the attachment never dies, never leaves you, and never changes.

Use the energy of this relationship to go forward in your life.  Be grateful that you could experience a physical connection too. Understand that ultimately it’s the connection of your souls that drive you forward into a new way of being. Honor this, thanks this, and release the feelings of sorrow.

My beloved father died last year and it has even been difficult for me to let him go.  I think of him every day and miss him tremendously.  What I have come to realize is that he still has a positive impact on my life, even without his physical presence.  I am the representation of him.

We are all connected to our loved ones.  We are all representations of our loved ones.  We will all continue to experience a connection long after our loved ones have left this life. I hope you will find a way to honor your loved one by living the best life that you can, while being grateful for the experience of knowing them in this physical world.

We are Connected


While I was traveling this past week, I thought about all of the places I have been and one thing kept coming to mind.  No matter what place, race, culture, or age I encounter throughout the world, people strive for the same thing. We want to live a peaceful life.  We want to be happy and content.  We want to feel a connection to others. Here is what spirit has to say about connection…

See the world as something grand—as a world that has the capacity for people to learn and remember who they truly are. Understand that we are all connected. Everyone is connected to the unseen world. If you looked at your neighbors, your friends, and loved ones in a way that made you feel connected (even if it is just imagining an invisible cord of energy that connects our souls) your whole vision of how you see someone would change. You would see that we are all dependent on one another. We are important to each other’s well-being. Imagining this for everyone you meet will make you think about your very survival. What is good for one—such as kindness, acceptance, and a willingness to listen—can make your own life all it should be: full of the same.

See others as your lifeline to the unseen world and to one another and you will never look at someone else the same again. It will be a reflection of you and how you want to be treated and how you want to feel. Try this and you will begin to understand the big picture of connection.

I chose this picture because it represents the roads we can travel to experience the beauty of the natural world and to meet others who are doing the same.  We can experience our connection to each other by opening our minds to the possibility that we are more alike than different.  Whether it’s in your own backyard or somewhere in the world, find your place of connection. Use this connection to understand yourself and others.

Follow the Joy


Today’s post is all about letting go and trusting that what is ahead is what you need.  I am the first one to admit that this is very difficult.  I am a planner, an analyzer, and I definitely feel more comfortable if I know what lies ahead.  I chose this picture because it reminds me of the path we take every day, the path that leads us to our future.  If we allow things to be as intended, we will ultimately find the path to joy.  Here is what spirit has to say about “letting go.”

When you learn to let go of expectations of what will be, your life will unfold in a way that brings joy. The joy comes in knowing that you are loved and guided.  You are thought of as an individual who has something to offer the world, regardless of what others might say. Understand that we each have a purpose in the world–a reason for being. This is the key to acceptance of self. When you understand and accept that you are not here by accident and that you have something to contribute regardless of how you present in the world, you will then understand your place.

If you were to let go of all expectations of how your life should unfold and trust that you have help to guide you to your purpose, you would not feel the need to control. You would not feel the need for reassurance from anyone. You would only trust that where you are going is just as it was intended. You would listen to your inner self. You would follow the joy. You would be at peace no matter what is going on around you. This is the ticket to letting go. This is the way to true happiness.

Being yourself and trusting the unseen world is all that you need. The rest is self-imposed. The rest is what causes discontent. The rest means nothing in the end.

I have thought about this a lot since I channeled it. It is a good reminder that no matter what happens in our life, we can choose how we respond. We can trust ourselves and the unseen world.  We can fully accept who we are.  We can listen to our inner voice and follow the joy.

Forgiveness of Self

Let’s talk about forgiveness.  Often times we think of the word “forgiveness” and we use it as a way to describe what we do for others.  Today let’s talk about what you can do for yourself.  Sometimes the harshest critic is the one that lives within us.  We judge our reactions, we judge our looks, and even judge the way we move through the world. I am asking you to think about how judgement of self affects your mind, body, and those around you. This is what spirit has to say about kindness to self:

If you treated yourself with compassion for all the things that you say you did wrong, you would live a more peaceful life. After all, you are just expressing yourself in a way that you have learned. If you had learned that sometimes things do not go your way or emotions can be very strong, you would have learned that these are all reactions that can happen when you have the highs and lows of emotion. This is a normal part of being alive.

 When we treat our emotions as normal, we are saying that we are entitled to feel how we feel. Treat yourself with compassion. Treat yourself respect. Understand that the highs and lows of emotion are normal. This does not mean that you are entitled to belittle another, react violently, or insult the world. It just means that you can forgive yourself for feeling in a way that made you feel uncomfortable. This can be in the form of sadness, anger, resentment, or any of the so-called negative emotions that you may exhibit. Have them, honor them, see what is behind them, and then treat yourself with compassion. This is how it will dissipate from the body. This is how you will move on and begin the process of understanding yourself. Maybe then you can convert a negative emotion into a positive outlook. Getting stuck on what you should or shouldn’t feel is not in your best interest. It is not in the best interest of the world.

 See your life as a way to learn, to be whole, and to be happy, even with all the emotions that come from being alive.

I definitely have had moments of regret about my reaction to a situation, a person, or sometimes it’s my regret about not reacting at all.  We are all here doing the best we can, so breath in a big sigh and be kind to yourself.  Forgive yourself—this life is about learning. Let go of the feelings that keep you in regret.

What is Your Message?

Hello everyone! Let’s talk about you. Let’s talk about how you can bring your best self forward. I picked this picture because it shows that we can always find a way to be our amazing true self.  I was struck by how these flowers were able to somehow grow even though the soil it needed was limited.  The rocks, cement, and metal cover where taking up most of that space. Regardless of the obstacles, these flowers were able to take root and bloom to their full potential anyway. Because they were able to bloom, they made everything around them look more beautiful too.  The following channel speaks to the obstacles that can sometimes block our path to revealing our best self…

We all wish that something might be different than a circumstance that brings us suffering. Difficult situations are there to teach. They are there to teach you to remember what is truly important. To remember that whatever happens outside of you does not define you. You are what is inside. This will never change. Learning to see yourself as a soul, a beacon of light, a charge of energy is the real truth and that suffering is optional. Experiencing anger is optional. Any feeling that takes you away from your essence of being is optional. The feeling that brings you joy, happiness, and contentment, always comes from being in balance with your inner core. If you are experiencing anything other than that, then you are out of balance. You are not recognizing that you are a spiritual being inside the physical body you call self. Find a way to align, to understand, and to accept yourself. The rest will seem like it should be just as we described–joyful and full of contentment.

Ok, I will admit that I am not so good at remembering this during troubled times.  I can only try to keep it in my awareness and act from there. The trick is to understand it, adjust your thinking, and try to avoid more suffering.  More than anything, we can understand that we all have something positive to offer regardless of our circumstance.   The next channel talks about just that…

Everyone has a message for the world. Whether it’s through their actions or whether it’s through their words. There is always something to teach others. It’s getting past the doubt, the worry, and the negative view of themselves that will then reveal what that message is. When you are tuned into your inner self and you are accepting of everything that makes up you, you will then understand what it is that you have to bring to the world. Hidden beneath doubt is goodness, acceptance of all things, and the willingness to treat others with compassion. You begin to see that we are all together as one. One in spirit. One in strength. One in the energy that exists in the physical and spiritual world. Use this as a way to call in your own truths. Find a way to understand what you can contribute to the greater energy of life. Bring it forward for the good of all. That will be the ultimate message of self.

You Are Energy


Welcome to this weeks blog post!  Energy is the topic.  Energy you say? Yes, because in order to understand yourself, it is helpful to understand energy and how it influences you and everything around you.  I picked this picture because it perfectly displays how energy is housed in different forms. It is especially apparent in the building of the clouds on the horizon.  What you may not see is how it is also housed in the grass, sand, sky, and everything else you see.  We are a housing for energy too.  To understand this better, I channeled the following message…

Your thoughts produce energy. Your actions produce energy. Your very presence in the world is energy in the making. We all have energy that surrounds us, is within us, and we expel energy every day. This is what makes up you. Aligning your energy with the positive is the best way to keep your energy in balance.

If you were to think of yourself as a housing for a vibrational energy (we each vibrate at a certain level), you would understand that keeping your energy in balance is really the key to feeling stable, calm, and peaceful within. The thoughts you think are energy expelled and are brought to you throughout your body. The expansion of your mind to include enlightenment can only increase and balance your energy. Negative thinking can only deplete your energy.  Look at yourself as an energy center, a ball of light and electricity, and an ever-changing vibration.  This would help you to understand that keeping your energy intact within the boundaries of the physical self is what will keep you balanced as a whole.

If you also looked at others this way, you would begin to see imbalances. You would strive to put your own energy back into balance. You would not look to do anything that would upset the balance. You would be kind to your body. You would only radiate goodness. You would redefine how you move through this world. Your body houses your center, your life force, your very being. Do not upset the balance.  Bring it back to you if you do. Forgive yourself for letting it go. We are all together as one in the end. 

Try to spend some time thinking about this and visualizing your energy center. This concept will help you to understand other teachings in the weeks and months ahead.
